Dave - Both you're mechanic and Hecto give you good advice. Myself, I would unbolt the two shock mount bolts and merely turn them around where you can get to the adjustment hole. Since it appears you may have bought this used, you don't know whether or not the shocks have been reversed to start with. It is not uncommon to turn your shocks around intentionally to prevent someone from playing with your preload settings at various motorcycle gatherings.
